How to be Uniquely You in an Overcrowded Photography Market
Nowadays, it seems like you can throw a rock a hit three people who claim to be a photographer. With visual platforms like Instagram making it easier for people to market themselves, it’s up to you to stay true to yourself in this overcrowded business. Below, I will outline a few ways you can stay true to yourself in this business.
Hone Your Skills
Natural light? Studio light? Indoor? Outdoor? Boudoir? Couples? Maternity? Families? Seniors?
There are so many areas of focus for portrait photographers. Shoot a little of each, attend workshops, network with others, and find your favorites.
Admit Your Weaknesses
In the beginning of starting a new business, you wear all the hats. As your business grows, don’t be afraid to hand some hats to others. Suck at website maintenance? Hire someone! Can’t figure out social media? Hire someone! Taxes got you down? Hire someone!
As your business grows start focusing more of your time and energy on the things you are best at and leave the rest to the experts. Hire a seasonal intern, interview a full time employee, get an accountant. Use a system with a built in workflow like Shootproof. It will allow you to breathe and maybe have enough time to take that bubble bath.
Share Your Strengths
Teach a class on editing. Host a workshop on social media engagement. Sell an eBook about finding the right clients. Create Lightroom presets or Photoshop actions.
You’re in this business because you’re good at many aspects of running a photography business. Share that knowledge with peers or beginners and maybe make some extra money while you’re at it.
Find Your Style
Take the time to discover your photography and editing style. Don’t try to conform. Clients who love your style will flock to you. If you change to fit the norm, you’ll lose yourself and enjoy the the journey less.
Never Stop Growing
There is always more to learn. Take a class, attend a workshop, make some business friends. You will continue to grow and it will show in your business.
