As a professional wedding photographer, most times your first interaction with a couple will be at their engagement session. This is a time to make the couple feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera and with their choice to hire you.
As photographers whose job is to photograph people, we sometimes forget that most people hardly get their photos taken professionally. Because of this it is up to us to guide them through their session and make them feel as beautiful as we know they are. My favorite way to achieve this is by giving couple’s prompts and not just poses to do.
Prompts give them something to do in front of the camera so that you can capture their genuine interactions with each other.
Here are my 3 favorite prompts to use with couples during an engagement session and everything you need to know to implement these at your next session.
Neck Kiss
Getting Started – Have the couple do one (or all) of the following:
- Face each other and embrace
- Have one person get behind the other and hold them
- Have one sit of the other’s lap
From any of the positions above have your couple take turns giving each other quick little kisses on the neck.
This prompt can give you some dreamy shots like the one I took below.
Face to Face
Getting Started – Have the couple do one (or all) of the following:
- Lay down on the ground
- Face each other and embrace
- Stand side by side
From any of the positions above you’ll want to have the couple get in close and press parts of their faces together. You can make it romantic by having them close their eyes and take deep breaths. Or you can make it fun and sweet by having them look at each other while you tell a joke or make a funny noise like I did for the photo below.
Puppy Sandwich
Getting Started – Have the couple do place their fur children between them. From here they each kiss their pup at the same time making a puppy sandwich like the photo below.
